1. God is Independent

Psalm 102

Psalm 115:3

Psalm 144:3

When we come to His Independence, we begin with His revelation to Moses in the wilderness. Exodus 3:14: “I AM”. This is God’s “Self-hood”. He is the original and primal Being, without origin or cause. What a declaration God made! “I Am that I Am.” He said, “I Be.” No debate. No argument. No proof. He is the self-existent Self, the original SELF. And, as God, He exists by the necessity of His own Nature.

You see, post-modern man wants to think God away. But to think God away is the height of arrogant folly. The fool hath said in his heart, “There is no God.” The reason this is such folly is that God’s Self-hood is essential to man’s self-hood. Think away God, and man has no grounds for existence. … God’s Independence implies that there is a priority here. God says, “I AM” – unconditionally. So what must we say? Here is the problem: ego. We must say, “i am” – lowercase. He is “I AM”; we are “i am”. This is the basic teaching of the Bible. … This is the essential attitude to receiving everything from God. This lowliness of ours before His great “I AM” is the basis of all faith, trust, devotion and receiving from Him.
