Psalm 97 ↗
For you, O Lord, are supreme over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods. Psalm 97:9 NLT
To “exist above,” to “rise above,” to “surpass all others.” So, when we say that God is Transcendent, we mean that He is above all others. … Now, you might think this means space above us. But the Holy Spirit (who wrote this Psalm) is not saying that “God is up, up, up far away.” This Psalm is speaking of quality of life. God’s quality of life is vastly above (superior to) our quality of life. His Independence is His separateness in Being. His Transcendence is His quality of life as the highest.
Then what is to be our response to this marvelous Transcendence of God? Verse 12 tells us. “Rejoice.” “Give thanks.” Give thanks for Who He is. Be thankful that God is Transcendent above us and our fallen world, and his Quality of Life can give our lives quality. He is the Quality Giver.
